Central idea (stand alone unit): Traditional art helps us make sense of our world and to understand aspects of culture.

Project Description: Students inquired into traditional Japanese masks by researching their purpose. They selected their favorite type of Japanese mask and created sketches inspired by the techniques of the traditional masks. After receiving feedback, students created their final sketch using color, as shown in their art journals below. Students using paper mache to create the base of their masks and added details using acrylic paint and permanent marker.

Mandalas

Project Description: Students inquired into mandalas; why and how they are created. They compared and contrasted various mandalas and discovered that all mandalas have a purpose and radial symmetry. Students created mandalas in groups using natural and found objects. Students developed a purpose for their mandala and created sketches in their art journals. After receiving peer feedback, students selected their best mandala and created the final mandala using their choice of materials.
