Central idea (stand alone unit): People use the elements and principles of design to create dynamic artwork.

Project Description: Students learned about the elements of art: shape, form, and pattern. They looked how a variety of artists use geometric and organic shapes to create artwork. Students investigated the artwork of Alexander Caulder, in particular his paintings and mobile designs. They created their mobiles using geometric and organic shapes cut from foam and assembled their mobile using bendable wire. Students created the base art by creating drawings which were inspired by the paintings of Caulder. After, they folded the base to use as support for the mobiles.

Pattern Weaving Plates

Central idea (stand alone unit): Noticing and analyzing patterns helps us explain and respond to our environment.

Project Description: Students inquired into pattern and how various artists use pattern in their artwork. They started by drawing patterns on a paper plate and painting the patterns using acrylic paint. Students thought about using colors that create contrast, and chose limited color palettes. Students added small cuts around their plates and used yarn to create their loom. They then weaved around their loom using a variety of colors of yarn to create their weaving.
