Central idea (stand alone unit): Traditional art help us make sense of our world and to understand aspects of culture.

Project Description: Students learned about the traditional Japanese art of Ukiyo-E (wood carving) and they learned that traditionally prints were of landscapes. Students sketched their favorite (real or imaginary) landscape and created their landscape art using oil pastels and liquid watercolors. They learned about linoleum carving (similar to wood carving) and chose to carve out the negative or positive space of their art. After experimenting with various printing techniques in their art journals, as shown below, students chose their favorite technique and created their final landscape print.

Graphic Design Posters

Central idea (transdisciplinary): Understanding how media can influence people’s thinking and behavior can help to make informed choices.

Project Description: In their homeroom class, students inquired into the influence of media. In art class, students learned about the elements of art and principles of design and investigated how designers use the elements and principles to influence their audience. Students created toys in their homeroom class and created a poster adverting the toy in art class using the app Canva.
